Lilith Blanche is a 24 year old women who's with a very abusive man named Daniel Michele. She has no family, no one to care for her, and no one for her to care about. She hates Daniel with a passion. She's tried to break up with him but he always beats her when she tries to. There isn't a part of her body that was bruised up at one point or another. They go to Los Angeles to stay at the Hotel Cortez for the last week of October. There they meet Mr. James Patrick March, a killer from the 20's but they don't know that.
