A 9-year-old boy is trapped in the basement after a large fire destroys the upper floors of the house and the hatch is covered by debris. He needs to find a way to escape or survive long enough to be found and is forced to go to extreme measures for the sake of survival

Increasingly, with a 24 hours news cycle, and citizen cell phone newscasters, our society is quick to make a judgement about the most serious of situations without any facts. Time is a great equalizer, but often the damage and pain created by rushing to judgement creates a wildfire that destroys anything in its path. Join me in this retelling of a story about a few heroic firefighters that were called to the carpet by the same community they risked their lives protecting. Not being able to defend against a media organization that buys their ink by the barrel, the fire department had to accept their licks despite doing everything right.

A devastating short story about a girl who loses her mother to a house fire.

A catastrophic house fire, where nothing is what as it seems. A girl who is alone, in more ways than one. A fire that burns more than just a house. I originally submitted this as a short-story for the Reedsy's Weekly Writing Competition, so there was a prompt, but I won't share it as it would ruin the ending. Enjoy!

I wake up to the familiar smell of burning wood and brick. Wait, I'm pretty sure I have never smelled that before. I look over at the clock, it's 2:35. How did this happen? Why does it smell familiar? What was I just dreaming about? Then the immensity of it fell upon me. The house is on fire. Why am I still in bed? I need to get out. I get out of my king-sized bed, I got it as an early birthday present because I turn 16 today, and groggily walk over and feel my door. It's not hot, so I'm okay. I open the door and smoke hits me like a thousand bricks. I fall to the floor, my ice blue eyes not seeing a thing, my lungs burning with every cough and inhale of the smoke.
