The twenty-third century. Earth had been ravaged beyond repair. The inner core of the city was a death bed for young people trying to get to know one another. Call me weird, but I wanted to find someone I could relate to. Someone to connect with: to romance. Unless you had money, you were out of the game. Until that day when I got lucky through another man's misfortune. I was in over my head, but where the heart is concerned, common sense is lost. This was one date I was never to forget.

Evie Brown wasn't planning to buy a hybrid. She only meant to look-to kill an hour between bakery shifts and maybe feed something that looked lonelier than she felt. But in the back of a glass-walled shop, half in shadow, sat a serpent hybrid with gold eyes and a silence that felt like a storm waiting for permission to break. Everyone else called him Serpent. Evie called him home. What begins as an impulsive act of kindness turns into something far more dangerous-and tender-than either of them expects. In Evie's tiny apartment of mismatched dishes and secondhand light, the creature who was caged learns warmth, routine, and the strange magic of being chosen. But names carry power. And when Serpent becomes Kade-a man with a past woven in shadows and a claim to the underworld he tried to escape-Evie finds herself standing between love and a legacy built on blood. Because some bonds aren't broken by power or fear- they're leashed by trust, and that makes them unbreakable.
