Just when the caterpillar thought her life was over, she became a butterfly. So, she spread her wings and learned to fly. I don't see my disability as something to be ashamed of or a negative aspect of my life. It has taught me how to be creative, think outside the box and maybe even rock the world... SPINA BIFIDA STRONG! "Annabella has been through a lot in her time here on Earth, and she is only 26! Being born with a physical disability, she never knew what to expect. At this point, she has dealt with a lot more than anyone in the world. From the day she was born, she has had more surgeries than usual and faced challenges that not many people deal with within a lifetime. However, young adults with the same condition can relate. She has met so many people that have always thought of her as one of the bravest people they know, despite not knowing what she deals with daily. Some days are easier than others, but to her, each day is a gift. Many wouldn't believe her when she says that she is thankful to be here, despite all she has dealt with, but everything she has encountered, good and bad, throughout her entire life, has contributed to her the gratitude and the happiness she feels every day. To help you understand, let's start with her story of living with Spina Bifida, from before she was even born." If anyone is enjoying my story so far and want to read it in full (this is just the rough draft), feel free to add it your to be read list on Goodreads. More information will come soon ;)

About half-way through Melodie's pregnancy, Duke and Melodie received news that they never thought they would hear. "It appears that your daughter will be born with Spina Bifida." Melodie's doctor said at her 20-week ultrasound, where she also found out her baby was a girl. It was discovered that their daughter had this condition when they found a quarter-sized hole in her tail-bone. At the sound of those words, Duke and Melodie didn't know what to think. They sat there in front of the doctor in silence. "Also, it looks like your daughter has fluid on the brain." "What?" Duke and Melodie were beyond confused at this point. They were definitely not expecting this news. "The term for this is hydrocephalus. She will need to have a shunt inserted into her head immediately after she is born. She will have two surgeries close to each other. Your baby will need to transfer by ambulance to Children's Hospital so that they can treat her condition. If she doesn't get the shunt, she won't be able to survive for very long. Once she is born, you will notice her head is slightly bigger than it should be."
