Years have passed since Madelyne Henderson left Hawkins, running from a past that was simply too painful to face every single day. Indianapolis had been a decent distraction, for a while. But no escape lasts forever, and that summer, the time had come to go back home.
The town is nothing like she remembers. Changed in ways she can't quite put into words yet. There's a strange sense of unease lurking beneath Hawkins' sleepy surface, as if the town itself is holding its breath.
Of course, it's hard to focus on any of that when she's constantly distracted by her brother's new best friend: a boy far too old to be hanging around kids and far too confident to go unnoticed. Steve is loud, overbearing, impossible to ignore.
Maddie feels his eyes on her wherever she goes, always watching, always searching, like he's daring her to turn around, to meet his gaze, to give in.
But she knows a bad idea when she sees one, and Steve Harrington, with his cocky smirk and a comeback always ready, is absolutely that.
The problem is, Hawkins seems to be full of things that aren't supposed to happen.
