Mae and her fellow doctors and nurses have already frequented this country particularly in this cold region. She is to serve God with her father, a missionary whose calling is to bring the people of Kalinga to salvation. Despite being high in the mountains, she looked forward to what she will become - a preacher of the Gospel. Finally, at age twenty four, a graduate of Nursing and Theological Studies, she leaves her life as a city girl to join her father in the High mountains of Kalinga, deep into the forests of Tinglayan to fulfill her call. What she is unaware of, however, is what comes her way when she gets there. For her call is not only to bring the people there to salvation, but to bring Eli Lumaweg to salvation - the captain of a terrorist group that takes her captive. ----------------------------------------------------------------- "Damn!" The man walked towards me, a whistle in his lips as he ran a hand on my back. My skin crawled in disgust. "Don't touch me!" I hissed, panting as I looked at his soiled and sweaty countenance. The other men around me began to chuckle. "I sure am gonna enjoy you tonight," He stretched his hand towards my face. In a snap, I turned in defense, stepping away from the horrid man as far as I could. Seconds ticked ... I felt nothing. Silence overcame the circle. What happened? I lifted my gaze slowly. Another man now gripped his outstretched arm. "You won't," Authority emanated from his eyes, strength manifest in the way his arm gripped the other. Slowly, his gaze made its way to me. I swallowed. Johanna Dumay came to the city chasing a better future, but what she carried with her was heavier than any suitcase-a heart of stone. Born from a broken home, her life was marked by disappointment, her dreams buried beneath years of loneliness and despair. In a nation that called itself "Christian," Johanna found no comfort-only deeper doubts. If God was truly loving, why had He let her world fall apart? With each passing day, her heart grew colder, her soul hardening into the very image of misery. And then-He showed up. An encounter she never saw coming begins to shatter the walls around her. The life she thought was meaningless is suddenly rewritten by grace, and every morning feels like waking into a miracle she never dared to hope for. This is the story of a woman once lost beyond saving-until love Himself found her. A story that whispers a truth many long to believe: no heart is too hard, no life too broken, no soul too far gone for God. --- "But Johanna-" her voice cracked with disbelief, eyes narrowing as if searching for the girl I once was, "you were the devil's darling all your life. What in the world happened to you!?" I drew in a breath, the weight of every scar, every midnight battle, every broken piece of me pressing into that single moment. "Jesus," I whispered, "Jesus happened to me."
