Maya finds her best friend Ana and her daughter hiding in their appartment in Brooklyn. Outside, on tge street there are scores of ICE agents searching for illegal immigrants. Then they hear a lound knock on the door. Ana's heart beats so fast against her chest, as if it wants to race out through her mounth. "Whoes there?", whispers Ana in her feeble voice. As the knock comes louder and more insistent, she summons all her strength to get on her feet and moves toward the door.

Nemesio, a 17 year old boy, making his way across Mexico to escape the terrors of his childhood home and seek refuge in the US. It is his duty to his younger brother, Alejandro, to make sure they escape Honduras. Kayla, a 17 year old girl, attending high school in Arizona, lives a carefree and easy life. She is a huge activist in the community, and is excited when the high school decides to sponsor a batch of illegal immigrants. Nemesio and Kayla's fates are intertwined, and they see everyone and everything around them truthfully for the first time. In the chaos, injustice, and greed surrounding them, they find each other, and learn the biggest lesson of all.
