Illiad Stories

This is an old, pretentious extract of a wannabe epic poem I found recently when digging through old drawers at home. Amongst the verse notes, this was the only part of it typed in draft, along with scribbled annotations. I think it dates from around 1992 but can't be sure. I clearly had too much time on my hands in those days because it is something to do with my fixation then with Shakespear's The Seven Ages of Man from As You Like It; the ageing life of Ernest Hemingway; his novels, The Sun also Rises / Fiesta, Snows of Killimanjaro and For Whom the Bells Toll; and (just to make it even more of a dilettante-fest) Homer's The Odyssey and The Iliad and all maner of other Arthurian legend ephemera). Quite ironic, as at the time of finding it, it is only a week after we we went to see Christopher Nolan's film The Odyssey. I was suddently reminded whilst watching that I knew more about the episodes from the book and film that I thought I would. I even discovered old editions of Odyssey and Illiad in my bookshelves back home afterwards. Funny how you forget old obsessions. The sub title of the poem then is the line 'La Cueva de los Huevos Perdidos' or The Cave of the Lost Eggs (Balls) as spoken by Robert Jordons joking with Anselmo in For Whom the Bells Toll. The image is a scan of the front of an old Time Magazine I have of 5th September 1960 (Just 1 day before I was born). It features my idol "Papa" and features a first article of three installments titled 'The Dangerous Summer' and documented the intense 1959 rivalry of Spanish matadors Antonio Ordóñez and Luis Miguel Dominguín. Hemingway had commited suicide less than a year later in July 1961. Google Gemini says my poem functions as a "highly dramatic, modern piece of free verse with sporadic rhyme" and an "irregular heterometric free verse written in a continuous (non-stanzaic)". Who am I to argue? I have decided to leave it as-found and as-written as a sort of time capsule to my head at the time!

"He was half of my soul, as the poets say." This is a work of added scenes to Madeline Miller's novel, The Song of Achilles. I wrote these after reading the novel, creating little moments I felt fitting in the real book. I hope you enjoy reading these figment of my imaginations as much as I enjoyed creating them.

THERE IS A BIT OF SWEARING. This is the ship between Patroclus and Achilles of The Illiad. I still ship Achilles and Briseus but I thought these were funny and wanted to put them here.
