The Deserterlands chronicles the adventures of a 14 year old girl who travels her desert-covered-planet with her father, learning to become a master explosion-defuser under his unorthodox teaching methods. The longer she spends with him, the more apparent it becomes that she isn't just learning about the three elemental explosions, but so much more-- who her father was before she met him, the story of his family, and why he now spent all his days deactivating life-threatening bombs buried just beneath the desert sands.

This volume is mostly focused on Talia, it expands on her past explaining how she came to be the person she is, while furthering her development as she heals from a past wound, leaving her better and stronger than she was previously as she prepares for the final exams of her last school year alongside the others.
