Catalina, dosud neochvějná strážkyně božské pravdy, začíná pochybovat. Podivná znamení, která ji obklopují, ji nevedou k dalším vítězstvím, ale hluboko do zapomenutých kronik a zakázaných ruin, o kterých se v chrámech mlčí. Pátrání po pravdě ji zavede k Umbrielovi. Má to být ztělesnění zla, démon z legend, který má být dávno zničen. Místo něj však Catalina nachází bytost, která je stejně děsivá jako fascinující - bytost, která popírá vše, co ji kdy učili. Rozhovory s ním nejsou jen únikem před povinnostmi, ale nebezpečným objevováním historie, která byla záměrně přepsána krví. Když se hranice mezi tím, co je správné, a tím, co je pravdivé, začne stírat, Catalina zjišťuje, že její největší nepřítel není mimo hranice říše, ale v samotném jejím srdci. Cesta, kterou si zvolila, ji nenávratně mění. A v závěru, když utichne ozvěna posledního boje, na ni čeká zjištění, které může navždy spojit dva znepřátelené světy - nebo je oba společně pohltit. Pravda má svou cenu. A Catalina ji právě začala splácet.
