He did give us the name of the fairy queen Lurline who built Oz, but he forgot to give us her motivation for doing so. The Empire of Oz series, with its primary heroine Glynnis, not only provides a prequel to Oz, she also offers a glimpse of modern life viewed from the eyes of a character L. Frank Baum hadn't thought of. Or better yet - as Glinda would say - Glynnis provides teen readers a little something in the way of the "art of social commentary".
