This is a poem for an English Assignment that I had worked so hard on, so I thought "Why not upload it?" I guess it's difficult, complex and slightly unnerving (?). It deals with the reality of society, the loss of individualism and the dark future of humanity and individuals in a dysfunctional society. Set in early 20th Century London, and is a Modernist work/poem.

Phoebe was initially happy for Alek when her life-long friend excitedly showed her his new abilities. No longer would they spend lunchtime wallowing about their deteriorating sense of self-worth. No longer would they be struggling to fight for themselves in a cruel world. They had a defense. They were powerful. But what happens when power gets to someone's head? What happens when someone brings danger to themselves and others with only one person to witness? Pheobe isn't the gifted heroine. She's the sidekick: out of the spotlight, without a chance of saving the day. She would be nothing without Alek. He's the only reason people even talk to her. Alek makes that perfectly clear.

The place I am from, Gibraltar, has a schooling system which I consider to be backwards; males are forced into one school and girls into another limiting, a lot of necessities like the toilets remain broken, there isn't enough space, there always seems to be a lack of teachers and the subjects offered are quite limiting. More on the substance, I have always felt undermined at school, especially during my GCSEs which was a difficult time for me. I had always felt as if they are squandering our personalities and forcing us to become subservient which I never liked. Some teachers would be amazing and great, whilst others would be terrible or simply wouldn't care about the students, I for one would get yelled at for not understanding the area's second language (Spanish) by my Spanish teacher instead of helped and encouraged to improve. Plus, certain mental conditions such as anxiety were never properly catered for which is also why I consider the school to be backwards. So in the end I wrote a rant which turned into this: my first proper poem. I hope you like it.
