Formally called The Weight of Perception follows Taeha, a high school student whose physical size becomes the lens through which everyone views him. Battling subtle exclusion, hurtful jokes, and a deep-seated loneliness, Taeha navigates a world where he is often reduced to a single, superficial trait. Through reflective, philosophical dialogues with himself, he confronts the painful reality of how others perceive him and the impact it has on his sense of self. Ultimately, Taeha embarks on a journey toward self-acceptance, learning that his true worth lies in the richness of his inner life, not in the judgments of the world around him.

Whispers. All that Tareos could hear was the swish of the air, the breathy words, the suspense escalating with every breathey pitch. As the pitches filled the room Tareos found it difficult to breathe and his heart rate began to increase dramatically. "Firstly..." Devonworth clears his throat,"... the son of Katerina Astrea and Llyr Godwine, Tutankhamun Ahura Astrea." The whispers crescendoed, their previous piano turning into a stern mezzo piano, the melody of voices and questions struggling to sustain themselves. "Secondly, the daughter of Ju Won Victorina and Celestinus Victorina, Ophelia Ching Shih Victorina" Somehow the whispers crescendoed even more, increasing to a ferocious forte with every voice part harmonizing upon the words 'Big Three', all increasing their pitch up a half step, clashing with each other, suspending, waiting for their resolution. "And finally..." Tareos takes a deep breath, full of apprehension as the moment he had been waiting for all day was about to arrive. He quickly finishes his sentence. "And finally the daughter of Honestas Olvidar and Vulcan Fideles, Ozwin Olympia Olvidar." As he speaks he locks eyes with Heremides in the back of the room who was smiling brightly in his direction. The choir did seem to fall out, an intense silence filling the room as the two friends exchange smiles and knowing glances. This song had ended. But another one always begins. Only about two seconds after he finished speaking the choir returned at full force, the next movement of this never-ending major work beginning where the last one left off, the sharp fortissimo invaded his eardrums, all voice parts asking in harmony if these children were as wicked as their parents. The only thing that Tareos could say in response was that he hoped they wouldn't be. His voice, however, got buried by the sound.

After that, I knew I wanted to become a proud non-conformist anti-normie. With Nagolbud's help, I was able to break away from the normie world and embrace my own unique style.

As students we're constantly pressured to be our own, unique individuals. However, we're not given the opportunities to do so, and when we make efforts they're labeled distastefully. We all have voices that aren't being heard. If we change the repetition we're used to and rebel a little bit, we might feel like we matter. We might feel like we're alive. A challenge to listen to the student voice and to break the restraints of the education system. Young Writer's Short Story Competition Entry. Written in 2014, 13 years old; this story will be rewritten and republished in late 2017.
