In an 1839 poverty-stricken, industrialized neighborhood of New York City, nine-year-old Sammy Jane Sumper has lived in poverty and shame, due to her selfish and abusive mother, Alice, whose scandalous life has ostracized herself from society. Alice's blasphemous life is composed of her unfavorable occupation and illegitimate daughter, who has never met her own father. When Sammy is sent to work for the cruel and powerful factory owner, Mr. Woolventomb, she at first contradicts his harsh methods of "encouraging" the workers, but then slowly succumbs to his unfair demands. She does this out of fear that she could be fired, and also by the fact that her mother would gladly throw her out of their two-room tenement and into the streets, were Sammy not bringing home the weekly pay. Then, a life-changing, yet risky, opportunity is presented to her. If she takes it, she will be able to leave her past behind, as well as create a positive future for herself and many others. If she plays her cards right, she will get what she has always desired, along with many other additional benefits to accompany it. She will finally 'make something of herself,' and prove to everyone that she is not going to end up just like her mother: poor, and alone. It sounds like the perfect, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to her, but Sammy does not realize that with every benefit comes a burden. She is walking on thin ice, and one false step could send her and those she cares about spiraling down into a worse situation in life than she had lived in before.

The War Beast - Synopsis In the oppressive and mechanized Steel Nation, where extreme industrialization has forged a brutal and controlled society, Cat survives on the fringes, hiding behind a white cat mask and honing her mechanical skills to defy the authorities. Small and agile, she is a skilled thief, capable of infiltrating heavily guarded factories to steal rare parts and perfect her inventions-including P1, her highly intelligent mechanical spider. But when a heist goes wrong and her escape puts her in the crosshairs of the Rebels, Cat finds herself entangled in a conflict much larger than she ever imagined. Nolan, a mysterious young man with ties to the resistance, sees her as a crucial asset in the fight against the oppressive regime. Reluctant, Cat resists, for her true goal is to escape the Steel Nation and find her long-lost brother. As she perfects her greatest invention-mechanical wings that could finally grant her the freedom she craves-Cat uncovers buried secrets about her own origins and her family's past. Now, she must decide whether to fight for a different future for her people or follow her solitary path into the unknown. In a world where every gear turns in favor of the powerful, The War Beast is a story of resistance, courage, and self-discovery, packed with action, steampunk technology, and a heroine who dares to challenge the impossible.

A historical fiction short story I wrote in year 9. Although, Elsie, and the characters in this story didn't actually exist, many of the events did take place. In the time of the Industrial Revolution many poor children were subject to child labour and cruel working conditions. If a child were to be late to work, they would be punished brutally, and if they were to become sick or unable to work, they were fired and given no money. In the 19th century, there was a large factory called Bryant and May's which produced massive number of matchsticks; however, these came at a cost. They used a harmful element called white phosphorous (known as yellow phosphorous back then), on the tips of matchsticks. This proved fatal for many of the predominately women and children working at the factory. The workers were subject to 12 hours of work handling this substance and many developed what is known as phossy jaw. I loosely based the factory Elsie worked in on Bryant and May's, and mention the effects of what working with white phosphorous caused such as when I mention Elsie's 'remaining teeth', and how Maude's gums are 'glowing' an eerie 'green', which is said to have sometimes happened when workers were exposed to white phosphorous. In this text I mention physical abuse to children, dangerous environment and duties, worker exploitation, poverty, and overcrowding houses. This story is based on the happening of the Industrial Revolution, in particular the 1800s, in London.

Twelve-year-old Sarah Lee longs to remain in the golden fields under a starry sky forever, but life has other plans for her. After the bleak spring of 1816 yields meager crops, Sarah's family flees its home in the English countryside to labor at a textile factory in newly industrial London. A factory accident several months later leaves Sarah's father out of work and her family desperate for money. Despite the worries of her older brother Thomas, Sarah disguises herself and ventures into a dangerous new job. Sarah soon learns that life in London is not as simple as it seems. She meets Jamie, a sullen, aggressive boy who helps her adjust to the new conditions. But Jamie has dark secrets of his own, and his reluctance to trust strangers clashes with Sarah's burning curiosity about his past. As the city creeps towards winter, Sarah and her friends stand face-to-face with the horrors of London poverty-rising prices, rampant crime, disease, and hopelessness-and it becomes clear that not everyone will make it out alive. Everyone has a secret, and the consequences can be more devastating than any of them can imagine. WARNINGS: This excerpt contains descriptions of physical injury and child abuse. There is a more detailed content warning in the published book. Sweepings of the Street is now available for purchase! Enjoy the first 4 chapters, then consider getting a paperback or ebook version of the full book! Available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org, Kobo, and more, or upon request at your local independent bookstore.

The first two parts focus on the struggle of the Homefront during WWI. The Short Story focuses on the life of a 12 year old girl and her twin brother, and the poem has more of a general look on things. The third part is about the Industrial Revolution and just focuses on problematic conditions in factories at the time but in an interesting way. Historical Fictional with a little bit of an original touch.
