A young teenage girl, haunted by the memories of her father's execution, attempts to escape a cruel regime by night. A solitary woman, abandoned by her husband, inadvertently plays into the cruel hands of 'the state'. In another totalitarian regime a traffic light fixer is dealt with brutally for admiring a sunset. All these characters capture the essence of what it's like to be disempowered and cruelly dehumanised at the hands of a heinous, corrupt power. This sharp collection of pertinent short stories throws an at times uncomfortable light on cruelty, injustice and persecution that is all too relevant today. But ultimately these stories celebrate the strength and determination to survive at all costs, that exists within all of us.

Growing up in a world that seemed to discard him as easily as it noticed him, he learned to shrink himself, to expect less, and to leave before anyone else could. But growing up means facing truths that don't always choose you back. As Javi stands on the edge of who he used to be and who he might become, one question lingers heavier than the rest: will Evi ever truly see him-not as someone easy to leave behind, but as someone worth staying for? Or will he become just another name in the long list of people he almost had? In a story shaped by quiet heartbreaks and uncertain beginnings, Javi must decide whether to keep chasing something that may never be his-or finally learn how to choose himself.

That's how the group rolled, but not Malcolm. Malcolm was never one to pick a fight. He had good grades, was good at sports, and even had a job at the family barber shop. The worst part of it all was that they weren't what everyone made them out to be. They, Malcolm, were never the bad guys.

This poem is dedicated to all the people who have been betrayed by the organizations that were supposed to protect them. It was inspired by a small instance where justice was not served, but as I started writing it, I realized that there are so many major injustices happening every day. I alone may not be able to stop these things from happening, but I hope my words will inspire others so that together, we can make a difference.
