A young teenage girl, haunted by the memories of her father's execution, attempts to escape a cruel regime by night. A solitary woman, abandoned by her husband, inadvertently plays into the cruel hands of 'the state'. In another totalitarian regime a traffic light fixer is dealt with brutally for admiring a sunset. All these characters capture the essence of what it's like to be disempowered and cruelly dehumanised at the hands of a heinous, corrupt power. This sharp collection of pertinent short stories throws an at times uncomfortable light on cruelty, injustice and persecution that is all too relevant today. But ultimately these stories celebrate the strength and determination to survive at all costs, that exists within all of us.

I once knew a girl. She had jet black hair. Long and straight. She wore Jean overalls and sneakers to school. She was short, stubby and cute. Most days she was happy but her temper was scary. She played on the neighborhood streets with her family and friends, she was a good kid who grew up with good values and believed in a fair and just world. Suddenly at the age of 10 it all changed. Her big brown gleaming eyes saw more, she began to see the world as it was and that. . . That was where it all went wrong. (I write this with a heavy heart as the story that unfolds is based on true events and raw emotions. I chose to write this in a way it's easy to read and with the intent for it not to be as dark as it actually is.)

Zavier and Daniel were inseparable as children. But after their parents' divorce, the brothers were forced to live separate lives, each with a different parent. Phone calls became occasional, texts became silence, and before long, they were little more than memories in each other's lives. Then Daniel dies.
