This story is unreal and is NOT a romanticization of intermarriage. Intermarriage was still a part of some families back in the days.
It was a beautiful autumn that took place in October 1981. The Adams and Blanchards were receiving excessive hate from the American community in Massachusetts for their constant and generational intermarriage. The current generation of both these families didn't like their traditions of intermarriage either. Yet, some of the older family members were reluctant to stop it, so it was finalized that the oldest children of each of the family were to be betrothed, as this would be the last intermarriage. This gained enough social acceptance for the time being.
The last intermarriage was to be that of Desiree Adams' eldest son, Jude Adams, a 33 year old litigator who earns about $900 a month and makes himself along with his family lead a spectacular lifestyle. Desiree's eldest brother's daughter, Madeline Blanchard, has two daughters, 16 year old brain cancer survivor Esme Blanchard and 15 year old Emmy Blanchard. It was one of them to be-and everyone knew it'd be Esme, because Emmy didn't want to marry Jude, and the Blanchards always favored Emmy, so Esme, who was never in a relationship, never had a choice. She literally had to marry her mother's cousin.
Yet, Esme felt the sense of unwavering devotion towards Jude, despite the 17-year age gap, but she believed that he might treat her a little better, unlike her parents.
However, Jude had a girlfriend, 26 year old Rebecca Guilia, a fashion designer. He was uncomfortable marrying someone much younger than him, especially when she was under 18. Yet, he slowly was ready to let Rebecca out of his life, shortly after marriage. He even thought of accepting Esme as a wife, but his siblings wouldn't be so kind to Esme.
This wasn't a marriage any of them wanted, but they promised they would make a positive difference together and stop forced intermarriage once and for all.
