Fourteen-year-old Alex Florent has lived his whole life in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada - it's all he's ever known. So when his parents announce during the summer before ninth grade that they're sending him halfway across the world to Huaxing International Academy in Shanghai, he doesn't know how to react.
On one hand, Alex knows he'll have guidance from a family that works in the Chinese branch of his parents' company. Huaxing International Academy has a good reputation, too - known for its affordability, accessibility, social environment, cultural diversity, and wide range of subjects - possibly the saving grace for Alex's dismal academic record. On the other hand, it's daunting to move halfway across the world to live alone in a city where he is unfamiliar with the people, language, customs, and culture.
Crystal Yan, the star student of her grade at Huaxing International Academy ever since she enrolled two years ago, is about to start grade nine. She has it all planned out - personal schedules, study goals, extracurriculars and hobbies... What she never expected, though, was to meet her ex-boyfriend from grade seven, back when she lived in Canada-who is none other than Alex.
When the worlds of these two teenagers collide again, what will happen this time?
