I was twenty years old, five months pregnant, and kneeling on the front porch when he walked away.
Inside, the house stood empty. The walls had been stripped bare, the life we'd built dismantled room by room. Outside, I vomited until there was nothing left, my body betraying me in every possible way as he stepped over me without a word.
The truck door slammed, the engine faded, and he never looked back.
For one foolish, breathless second, I believed he might turn around. He didn't.
As I lay there in the February cold, my tears disappearing into the splintered wood beneath my cheek, I searched for the moment I became someone he no longer wanted. Was it before he asked me to build a life with him or only after I believed him?
It would take me years to realize I was asking the wrong question.
