Names have no meaning in Riverswift; it is the people that define them by their personalities and strengths. But for Etsu, it has never been this way. In the early 18th century, A small hunting settlement on the Hudson Bay must learn about it's past in order to survive the coming winter. It keeps getting colder, and people keep disappearing. Benjamin and Elu, a pair of trappers that live in the settlement learn that the truth about what's happening may not save them from the insidious entities that haunt them at night.

This story overlaps with Life's Lucky Happenings. It is written from the point of view of Jessica Berger. Jessie is from small town Iowa where she and her best friend planned their early lives around leaving town. They go to Drake University in Des Moines. They are initially disappointed and realize their goal had been to get out of Vienna but not many plans after that. Then Jessie meets soccer player JJ and both their lives change.
