Nailea grew up in Iowa with her two best friends, Paige and Kate. She was raised by her dad and at the age of 10, she had to move to Connecticut where her dad's girlfriend lived with her son. Despite living in another state, she tried to maintain her friendship with Paige and Kate through letters since they weren't allowed to have phones. However, she lost touch with Kate, and Paige eventually moved to Connecticut. Adding to her challenges, her father passed away. Currently, Nailea faces the difficult situation of leaving her home due to her stepmother's disapproval of her sexuality. She relocates to Iowa, where her only other family member, Aunt Lisa, resides. Aunt Lisa is the women's basketball coach at Iowa. Nailea makes the move with her older brother and his wife. She worries about leaving behind her girlfriend, Caroline, and her best friend, Paige, and wonders if her relationship with Caroline will withstand the distance. Besides, she is concerned about mending her relationship with her stepmother.
