So, the two decide to go on an adventure to find the stones and get the power, but they must pass the temple. After making it to the end... The temple rejects Dib, but accepts Zim. But when Zim uses his powers to beat up Dib, the part Zim missed about the legend takes place: If the user uses the powers for evil, the power corrupts them, and they die. But the corruption didn't kill Zim, it just made him stronger and made him lose his mind (even more than he already has, if that's possible).
