This is a story based on the creation myth in Shinto. The tale of Izanagi and Izanami. In case you don't know, Izanagi and Izanami were two Kami (gods) sent to create the world. They did so with the help of the Jeweled Spear of Heaven, and created Japan. There they married and had children. However, tragedy struck when Izanami died birthing Kagatsuchi the fire god. In a state of grief Izanagi drew his sword and slayed the child, splitting him into many smaller flames that travelled the world. Izanagi eventually went to Yomi, the underworld, to look of Izanami and retrieve her. Izanami had already eaten the fruit of the dead and tried to bargain for her freedom, but Izanagi lit a torch and saw his beautiful wife had become a hideous rotting corpse. (though some stories go beyond to where she was birthing demon gods or something.) In a state of fear and grief he ran away, but Izanami in a fit of fury sent Raijin after Izanagi. Izanagi narrowly escaped, sealed Yomi, but heard his wife claim she shall kill a thousand of his creations every day. He responded with that he shall create one thousand five hundred more. He later was cleansing himself of Yomi's taint and creared three new gods. Tsukuyomi the moon god, Susanoo the storm god, and Amaterasu the sun goddess. he gave Amaterasu his neckalce and claimed she will rule over all of Heaven. He then went on to live a more secluded life. Many centuries have passed since then, and in the modern day is where out story takes place.
