The Mikaelson family visited Russia a year prior to the Fall of the Romanovs. They were warmly welcomed in St. Petersburg and quickly became close friends to the Czar and his family. They especially took a liking to the youngest Romanov daughter, the Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov. After the deaths of the Imperial Family, the Mikaelsons fled Russia when they caught word of their father drawing nearer to St. Petersburg. They mourned. However, over 90 years later when they set foot in the city of New Orleans, the empire they built from the ground up, they are shocked not only by the vampire Marcel, who they assumed to be dead, to be up and kicking running the city that once belonged to them but there was one other they did not expect to see.
