when king Robert visited Winterfell to ask Ned to be his hand, a wrong detour and he found himself in the training yard where a young Jon snow vents out his frustration on a dummy. With the death of his brother brother stannis, and the death of Jon Arryn, Robert had two positions that needed to be filled. In shorter words, four wolves leave Winterfell rather than three.
