It works, and soon enough, Alex and Jack are best friends, and they might even fall in love along the way. Alex smokes a pack a day as Jack sips on lemon juice. Alex works at a pizza restaurant as Jack does his maths homework. Alex thinks he's going nowhere in life while Jack wants to become a history teacher. They don't like each other all that much, but they listen to each other standing by their opposite windows.

Alex is really, really depressed and his friends try to help him through his depression. It doesn't work, but when Rian, Alex's best friend since practically forever, finally gets it through Jack's head that he should at least go and talk to Alex, will things change?

"I-I don't know, it just sort of happened I guess." Alex says shrugging as they say on the bridge looking at the peaceful river with the gentle summers breeze blowing on them. Jack turned a dusty pink and he says "Is it bad that I'm flattered by that?" making Alex chuckle and sniffle "No, it tells me that you don't hate me" he says looking at him. Jack turned to Alex with a serious expression on his face and he cupped the boy's chin gently making Alex look at him dead in the eyes. "I could never hate you Alex. You mean too much to me." He says seriously which made Alex blush but mumble "But not enough to be your boyfriend." under his breath. Jack sighed and says "Look I don't know what the future will hold but I do know this, as long as I get to see you smile. Everything's alright in my world" smoothly and Alex melted into a puddle. Alex nodded and held his free hand once Jack let his chin go and they looked up at the stars. For once, everything felt right "Hey Jack?" "Yeah?"
