She died with a secret she never got to keep.
He went back to make sure she never had to give it up.
Her last words weren't about the war.
They weren't about Voldemort, or the battle, or the blood on the corridor floor.
They were about a question Harry had asked her once - carelessly, on an ordinary evening -
"If you could have one what-if, what would it be?"
She hadn't answered then.
But dying, with his hands holding hers and the battle still loud somewhere behind them, she finally did.
"My what-if is that I tried harder. Before I forgot. Before it was too late."
"I think if I had been braver... you would have been mine. Properly. From the beginning."
She placed her hand on his head one last time.
The way she always did.
The way that always meant - the world can wait. I have you.
And then she was gone.
Harry Potter won the war.
But some losses don't feel like winning.
So he went back.
Back to seventh year. Back to the Great Hall.
Back to before Alya Blackthorne became someone who gave everything and got nothing in return.
She doesn't remember him.
She doesn't remember James.
She doesn't remember any of it.
But Harry does.
And this time, she doesn't get to disappear.
Between Two Worlds -
A story about the mother Harry never got to keep, the love James never got to hold, and eight people who crossed time to fight for a future worth living in.
Some wars are won. Some losses aren't.
But some people are worth going back for.
