One thing one could say about Arthur Ashford is that no place had ever kept him long enough to become his home. So when he returns to London for his brother's funeral, he expects grief, awkward relatives, and a quick departure. Instead, he finds Kathe-the widow. She is composed. Elegant. Entirely too in control for a woman who has just buried her husband. Naturally, Arthur decides this is none of his concern. Unfortunately, he keeps noticing things. A leather agenda that makes no sense. A household that runs too smoothly. A widow who always seems to be exactly where she should be-no more, no less. And the more he looks, the worse it gets. Because suspicion is inconvenient. Attraction is worse. And Kathe is both. Arthur tells himself he is imagining things. The difficulty is that he has never been good at leaving things alone. 💫 Victorian Gothic mystery with a slow-burn romance 💫 Forbidden love 💫 Stron heroin 💫 Funny and witty CHAPTER BY CHAPTER

This is a first, very rough, draft of a modern-day Jane Eyre with the working title "Moorland Hall", which I began during NaNoWriMo 2010. Got stuck after 17k words and haven't written any more since then. There is a part of it which in part is polished a lot more in comparison (the meeting in not-Hay Lane), because that part was written as part of a course in creative writing, and it went through about five re-writes, whereas the rest ... well, the rest I haven't even read since I wrote it! I stopped writing because I just got stuck with the house party. As I was writing, I was bored and then it dawned on me that one of the reasons for being bored was because a house party is so NOT modern. You can't have people (even fashionable, rich people) go off to someone else's for a couple of weeks and then have them stop by for a couple of weeks. It felt completely off, and at the time, I was stuck trying to think of something to use instead that WOULD work in a modern setting, and ended up just shelving the whole thing instead. Anyway. Feedback is much appreciated, even though it's just a rough first draft so there is a lot to be desired. Plot is one, checking chronology with the original another. I was also thrown off a bit because I messed up one day, jumping ahead of the plot.

Jane Eyre is alone in the world. Disliked by her aunt's family, she is sent away to school. Here she learns that a young girl, with neither money nor family to support her, can expect little from the world. She survives, but she wants more from life than simply to survive: She wants respect, and love. When she goes to work for Mr Rochester, she hopes she has found both at once. But the sound of strange laughter, late at night, behind a locked door, warns her that her troubles are only beginning

The original story, by Charlotte Brontë, is probably one of the most excruciatingly wonderful love stories ever. Jane's harsh, but notably moral life is something that not many people of this day can relate to. Most of us can relate to Edward. His imperfectness counteracts Jane's immovable moral compass. But, in the end, they are made for each other. We know that they go on to get married, have a child, and then Edward goes on to see, partially, again. They have been married for ten years when the book ends. This story is about what happened to them from their wedding day and so on....

The ending of Jane Eyre didn't stay true to the main heroine's feminist ideals, according to many fans of the novel from around the globe. In this spectacular retelling of the proto-feminist novel by Charlotte Bronte, Jane doesn't get with her 'dream man' Edward Fairfax Rochester and stays true to her girlboss ways.

Enjoy the first chapter of my NA contemporary romance, A Love for the Pages, on Wattpad for free! Kiss. Marry. Kill. Nineteen-year-old June Eyermann has always known exactly which of her favorite Byronic heroes goes where. She'd kiss moody and possessive Rochester from Jane Eyre and marry prideful but repentant Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, leaving obsessive and spiteful Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights to be chucked off a cliff-but no. She couldn't leave any of her heroes behind. She lives for her favorite fictional worlds. But June is about to get a serious wake up call when she returns home for the summer after her college freshman year. Stuck somewhere between feeling like a kid again under her parents' roof and being forced to start acting like an adult with worries about her future career, June looks at the library volunteer position offered to her as a way to keep her sanity for the next few months before she can go back to school. What June doesn't expect to find at the library is her favorite romantic heroes brought to life-all in the same man. Obstinate, prideful and even a bit rude, Everett Rockford shouldn't exactly be "dating material," even if June's heart rate accelerates whenever she's near him. But after discovering his enigmatic past and witnessing a few fiery moments of tenderness, June can't help but see Rochester, Darcy and even Heathcliff in Everett. If she's going to make it through the summer without becoming a tragic heroine in her own story, she has to separate the man from the ideals of fiction in her head. Because if there's one thing she knows about Byronic love stories, it's that they don't always end happily ever after. Learn where to buy: https://joypenny.wordpress.com/books/a-love-for-the-pages/
