It should be happy days. It's the Roaring Twenties and The Cupid/Archer Detective Agency is open for business. A little girl's body is found in a shallow grave right in the middle of the city's large park. Private investigators Florian Flix and Phalen Archer are at their wits end. A bungled investigation by the authorities may make it impossible to find the child's true killer. Archer is itching for some real detective work, but the only paying case involves a hysterical socialite who is determined to dig up the dirt on her husband, the financial wizard, Henry Lime. But either Henry is a saint or he covers his tracks perfectly. World War 1 still haunts both men. Flix is still tormented by horrendous nightmares, and Archer is doubting his faith. Archer turns to Father Tom Benjamin, only to find that the good Father may be hiding plenty of secrets of his own. The Cupid/Archer Mystery Series: 1. Beastly House 2. "Let them sing of the girls of long, long ago. Who were shocked if their elbow or stockings did show but I'll chant of the maidens whose ankles are free to show their half-socks, and the shape of their knees, let them praise those back numbers who turned in their toes and panted and fainted when MEN would propose; compared to the short-skirted, bob-haired fry who meet all proposals with right to the eye. Let them shed all their tears in a crocodile pour for the simple simp sister who flourished of yore but I'll cast my vote in the way I fell- for the girl self-reliant, bright, snappy and RIGHT" Palatyne Flâner grew up in a middle-class family in 1900's France, her perfect cookie-cutter life was pulled apart by war and death. Taking her life into her own hands, she runs off to join the nurses in the front line, there she meets the fiery spirit that is Phryne Fisher; together, the two patch wounds and comfort the injured soldiers till the war is won. Unsatisfied with the life she had returned to, Palatyne follows Phyane to the hot, vast and diverse country of Australia, where they soon become the unexpected solvers of complex murders.

Lucia and Charley are the products of Old New York's ruling elite. Prestige. Wealth. Tradition. Scandal. No one is immune. Not Charley, reckless, blithe courtier of trouble, heiress to the Montrose fortune, who has been conspicuously absent for over a year without a word of truth or explanation. Nor Lucia, as docile a daughter as any parent could wish for, carrying secrets of her own, slowly awakening to a yearning for things beyond obeisance to the established order, as deeply ingrained as Old New York's fascination for, and fear of, scandal. Sailing into the summer of 1929, on the eve of the Black Tuesday Wall Street Crash and a world on the brink of change, Charley and Lucia must keep their wits sharp about them in the pleasure capitals of the Continent and on the Nile to steer their futures away from peril. There are men and temptations to resist, intrigues and mysteries to untangle, secrets to hide, lies to weave, and jewel thieves to outsmart while, back home in New York and on the Exchange, the world rumbles and thunders ominously by. More hangs in the balance than the frivolities of the Jazz Age, the glitzy parties in London and the lures of Paris, automobile races, leisurely flirtations on the French Riviera, opulent Egyptian nights, and the catching of a brilliant matrimonial prize. This Grand Tour could prove to be the making of two young women, a prelude to freedom and independence, to saving and building an empire... Or perhaps merely an invitation to rebellion, scandal and unmitigated disaster. Running away or running towards? Tick-tock.
