The two live in the Shiganshina District in a part of Wall Rose, one of the three walls built to protect humanity from creatures called Titans. These titans have increased speed, strength and jaw strength as well. They ignore animals and feed off of humans. On one fateful day, the titans attack their district, forcing them to retreat into the next part of Wall Rose. This is where Evelyn's younger brother, Eren and his two friends Mikasa and Armin join the ranks as soldiers, in order to help defeat the titans.

During that time, both Jean and Eren learn slowly over time that even though they're enemies, they have many things in common. Especially one thing. They both grief every day over the death of a fellow cadet, Marco Bodt. Weeks later, Jean recovers and himself and Eren head with the Corps back outside the walls.
