Metahuman Jennifer Pierce found herself in love with Khalil Payne, except it seemed that fate did not want them together. Khalil was paralyzed by a bullet, which caused an evil man named Tobias Whale to form a deal with the striving track star. A robotic spinal implant was placed in his back so that he could walk again. Khalil soon became a runner for Tobias' mob, but was not repaid with gratitude. Tobias ripped out Khalil's robotic spine and he died a painful death-or so we thought. In reality, Payne was taken by a government agency called the ASA to become a weapon. They saved him, trained him, and implanted a brain chip that controlled his mind to the point that he killed his own mother with zero remorse. Khalil's alter ego, Painkiller, was a ruthless and twisted part of himself that was hidden but desperately needed for Khalil to survive. Painkiller was tasked to kill the Pierce family, however, Jennifer had powers of her own to keep everyone safe as her father was a direct relative of the first metahuman, causing her and her family's electric powers to be stable. Now, Khalil was brought back by TC, another metahuman whose abilities let him talk with machines.
