It's the 1930s, during the Great Depression. The Waltons of Waltons Mountain, Virginia are a big family of eleven. Esther, Zeb, Olivia, John, Johnboy, Jason, Maryellen, Ben, Erin, Jimbob, and Elizabeth Walton. Laurie Lee is a regular schoolgirl at the nearby Waltons Mountain school. She's best friends with Maryellen, and really close with the Waltons. But one day, a certain incident involving Laurie's secret crush makes her see something new in someone else-Maryellen's older brother, Johnboy. Laurie has lived her whole life close to Johnboy; he was like a big brother to her...but she finds herself feeling things for him that she never thought she would...and Johnboy is just as confused as her.
