Ponyboy and Johnny have been hiding in the church for weeks now. No one has stopped by, and with little warmth and the lingering chill of the broken down abandoned church, they slowly become desperate for a sense of self. But when Johnny finally makes a move on the third week, Pony finds himself in an utter state of confusion and begins to distance himself from him. Will this forever just be a memory to be forgotten or the beginning of something bigger?

Ponyboy feels guilty for the church fire. Johnny is in the hospital, and so is Dally. The rumble is tonight. Ponyboy feels sick, but he needs to go. He needs to pull himself together to make things right.
