Derek Shepherd wasn't always McDreamy, way back when he was a nobody he had a best friend who he would do anything for, including making a pact that if she didn't have a baby before 2003 he would help her to have one. When she took a pregnancy test it was negative so they thought it didn't work and soon after that she got a promotion and moved to England. It was only when she was in England that she realised it was a false negative, she was pregnant. She didn't tell Derek because he wasn't meant to be in the picture anyway so her daughter grew up not knowing her father. 16 years later, Maisie has left school (she is really smart so she was bumped up a few grades in school, and in England, you leave school at 16) so now she is heading to university in Seattle because her mum was murdered after witnessing a mugging and she wants to be closer to her dad (metaphorically) so she can get to know who he was better.
