Tanjiro had always been in online schooling and stayed home, only every sitting on his balcony for fresh air. He had his sister and his mom, but that was it. His sister went to school and clubs, and his mom ran a bakery day in day out, so he was always alone. Isolated. He decided to go online and make friends, feeling lonely for once. Maybe he could try going out, but it scared him. It all scared him to the core.

Basically, instead of being massacred, Tanjiro's whole family is turned into demons. Unluckily for Tanjiro, they lack cannon Nezuko's ability to resist eating human flesh.
