Two years after the events of Crooked Kingdom, Kaz receives a message from Inej: 'Coming back soon. Told you I wasn't done with Ketterdam.' Kaz is equal parts nervous and excited (not that he'd admit it), until an incident the night before she arrives leaves him with almost no memories of her, or himself, for that matter. When a beautiful girl seeks him out the next day, acting as if she knows him, Kaz is beyond confused. What if Jordie never died? And Inej wasn't in the wagon when the slavers came looking? What would happen if they met as Kaz Rietveld and Inej Ghafa, when Inej's family comes to perform in Ketterdam? But Kaz sees her walk the high wire and he feels certain he knows her even though they've never met. Why is she so familiar? Why do strange memories he's never experienced keep leaking in when he looks at her? Something dark is hiding just beneath the surface. Perhaps they can fight it off together to figure out why two people who have never met know each other so well.
