Kangxi ascended the throne at the age of eight. Following the posthumous decree of the Shunzhi Emperor, four regents were appointed to assist him: Soni, Sukesaha, Ebilun, and Oboi. Among them, Oboi was arrogant due to his achievements, becoming tyrannical and despotic. After the old minister Soni died of illness, Oboi won over Ebilun and executed Sukesaha, who refused to cooperate with him. He then monopolized state power, often roaring in the throne room and forcing Kangxi to submit to his will.
At the age of fourteen, Kangxi officially took personal rule of the government. However, Oboi not only refused to return power to the emperor but also formed a clique for his own selfish interests, gathering cronies and plotting to assassinate the monarch to usurp the throne.
From then on, Kangxi wielded imperial power personally, laying a solid political foundation for the revitalization of the Qing Dynasty.
