on the day of everybody's 18th birthday, they go to sacred ritual fields where the gods send down a creature to them that will guard them until their dying breath. But Deila is in for a shock rock when her creature is one that is considered a bad omen and she is banished to the outlands to die. but she is discovered by the Outlander rebels and there she discovers that the creature of bad omen that she received, is quite the opposite from what she expected.
