Opiekunowie nie chcą jej zdradzić jak się tu znalazła, co się stało z jej rodzicami. Wmawiają jej, że ma zaburzenia psychiczne, choć nie miała żadnych objawów. W sierocińcu poznaje bliżej Brajana, znanego z wielu ucieczek i kradzieży, Henryego i Melanie, która już dużo razy złamała zasady na oczach pracowników. Jest to powieść psychologiczna. Narrator w opowiadaniu ma formę pierwszoosobową - o wszystkim opowiada nam Marcelina - główna i tytułowa bohaterka pseudo-książki.
