Katherine, a reporter for the New York Sun, finds the story that will bring her out of the entertainment pages and onto the front page: the newsies strike. But, in the process of bringing these boys to center stage, she drags her best friends, Elizabeth and Rebecca, into the middle of the mess. As the strike progresses, the women find themselves in the center of big changes, both in the world around them and in their personal lives. Will they help to make the strike succeed and change their world? Or will they inadvertently ruin the strike's chance of making a difference? And what will happen once it's all over?

After unfortunate events, Theodosia is left to support and care for her family alone. However, times are hard and circumstances make finding a job quite difficult.
