KILWA KISIWANI , 1331 CE.
Before the colonial maps. Before the foreign flags. Before the coast was divided by borders that did not yet exist, Kilwa stood at the edge of the Indian Ocean-a wealthy Swahili city where coral-stone houses rose above the sea, merchants traded across distant waters, and ships arrived carrying goods, languages, faiths and secrets from worlds beyond the horizon.
But the sea does not give up its secrets easily.
When a merchant vessel returns to Kilwa without its captain, its cargo missing and its crew unwilling to speak, twenty-one-year-old Salim bin Hamadi finds himself drawn into a mystery that should have nothing to do with him. Then a man disappears. A ledger loses a page. And a strange symbol begins appearing where it should not.
Across the city, Zahra bint Musa, the intelligent daughter of one of Kilwa's most powerful merchants, discovers that her father's private accounts contain entries that do not belong in any ordinary merchant's ledger.
The deeper she looks, the more she realizes that her family's wealth may have been built upon secrets buried beneath the trade routes of the Indian Ocean.
Salim and Zahra come from two different worlds.
He knows the harbour, the tides and the men who make their living from the sea. She knows the merchant houses, the ledgers and the powerful men who decide what Kilwa remembers-and what it forgets.
They were never supposed to meet.
Now they may be the only two people capable of uncovering the truth.
Because somewhere between Kilwa, the southern coast and the gold routes of Sofala, someone is hiding a secret powerful enough to kill for.
And the gold is only the beginning.
In Kilwa, wealth travels by sea.
But secrets travel by people.
