'Instead of ascending a lofty throne, he found his grave in the bellies of fishes at the bottom of the sea'- Henry of Huntingdon
On the 25th of November 1120, a ship hit a rock, sinking just of the Norman port of Barfleur. It carried the heir to the English throne, leading advisors to King Henry I, loved knights and, crucially, Matilda, Countess of Perche: the King's illegitimate daughter. All of these people would drown. Prince William Aethling, the sole heir to the throne of England and the Duchy of Normandy, the last Norman Prince, would die trying to save his half sister.
