Two stories about Thanksgiving, an American family holiday in November. First chapter: On land that traditionally belonged to native people of North America, foreigners were allowed to settle their homesteads. John Chapman, known as Johnny Appleseed, planted apple trees, an invasive species, to establish his claim to land, and sold his homesteads to settlers who arrived later. Apple trees in nature typically produce fruit that is not fit to eat by itself; it may be used to make cider, or rarely apple pies, which create a festive mood. People of the United States of America regard the land as their own, and the apple trees as part of it, duly acquired from its prior owner. Second chapter: Edward Carpenter, thinking about his estranged daughter Emily and his never-seen grandson Adam, flashes back to his own adolescence. The second chapter is an assignment that I wrote for high school in 1994: an intertextual chapter for Janette Turner Hospital's novel, The Tiger in the Tiger Pit, containing quotations from William Shakespeare's play, King Lear. This OS is basically a fusion between King Lear and Romeo and Juliet from Shakespeare. Except the plot is different and characters have other names. I wrote this as an assignment for english class, sorry if it's kinda shitty. It's pretty short anyway. Anyone else trying to wade through English Literature books?? Join the club! Although I love English Literature one does have to keep the passion alive and therefore during my exams I got a couple of ways of making it fun and decided to share with you what I came up with. Sharing is caring right? These are normally in the form of interesting/sarcastic/comedic (in my opinion) chapter/poem summaries. This is sequel I wrote is carrying on from William Shakespeare's 'King Lear' tragedy drama! This sequel will be written in the format of the original, in other words, a script! I have decided to use Cordelia as one of my main characters in this story even though she dies in the end of the original play- I felt like she was a strong, loyal female character and based this story around her strong character. This play is carrying on as a tragedy. The king of France comes back to Albany after hearing the disasters that occured in the kingdom. Him and Cordelia are now in charge but throughout the play, Cordelia shows signs of symptoms of her fathers madness but will she follow in Lear's footsteps? Hope all of the Shakespeare fans enjoy :)
