Dr. Solomon Pearl sets sail across the Milky Way galaxy fresh off the grief of his brother's death. The famous and well publicized mission chartered future space exploration in hopes of a brighter future for human kind. All hopes were off for the crew, though, when signals ceased and the last distress call ended.
Kagru - an infamous penal colony convict - masterminds escape off high security Ganymede. He connects with a mutinous crew aboard the Federated Mining outpost. Kagru alone receives communication from an interstellar entity. Kagru believes this entity seeks judgment upon humankind for their foolishness and impudence - back on earth and abroad, for greed, hubris, and foolishness among the stars. He masterminded a scapegoat - millions of dollars worth of raw ore, to be jettisoned off with crew in tow to appease the anger of an almighty sentient being only Kagru has perceived. His months of secret communique to various crew members pay off.
Kagru and Solomon desire the same object: the handle that once was attached to Thor's Handle. Solomon leaves on a whim, to clear his mind and grieve properly whilst doing minimal experiments to pay dues for traveling across the Milky Way. Finding the handle would conclude a decade's worth of research, and thus give depth to historic study. Kagru, on the other hand, has other motivations - such as ensuring mankind never receives any form of communication or visit from the purported sentient being again. Ensuring no one finds the handle would mean closing off an alternative chapter in human kind's history leading to complete annihilation.
