She grew up watching her mother get abused by her father who was an alcoholic, she financially started supporting herself and her brother when she was 16. Jason Gill comes across as the typical bad boy but he is damaged and has been alone for as long as he could remember, his father is an alcoholic who cheated on his mother daily and would abandon him for months at a time. He shelters his emotions because the thought of letting anyone other than Ruben in has never been an option. His mother passed away from cancer the summer before Jason's senior year of high school. The only person Jason could truly depend on was his best friend Ruben Johal who was like a brother to him for the past 10 years.
