Isaac was new in town. He'd come for the holidays to help with the foster animals-
dogs that needed walking, cats that needed warming, small lives that didn't understand why winter felt so long. He wasn't expecting anything more than quiet days and early mornings.
He definitely wasn't expecting to open the cabin door and find Ivy standing there.
She had one hand raised, knuckles poised mid-knock, a knit scarf wrapped too loosely around her neck and snow clinging to the ends of her hair. For a second, they just stared at each other, the kind of pause that happens when your brain needs time to catch up with your eyes.
"I-" Isaac started, then laughed softly. "I thought this place was empty."
"I thought you were imaginary," Ivy said, blinking once before her smile broke through. "Hi, Isaac."
Outside, the wind picked up, snow swirling harder against the porch. Inside, the cabin felt suddenly warmer-like it had been waiting for both of them all along.
