A small town. A inherited bookstore. A sealed envelope with a date no one will talk about. Wren Calloway is twenty, stubborn, and new to Fern Hollow, Wisconsin. The town is warm on the surface and guarded underneath. The retired pastor everyone loved didn't die the way they're saying. And the man who owns the café on Main Street knows more than a stranger should. Some things are better left where they are. Wren hasn't learned that rule yet.

Following the death of his mother, as well as his father becoming crippled, seven-year-old Douglas Wilson was sent to boarding school with no proper parental figures to nurture his childhood. Upon returning over a decade later, the now 18 year old young man discovers his hometown of Palisade Harbor to be run down and dilapidated, only a husk of its former self. His father, wheelchair-bound and scarred both physically and mentally, is his only companion in the desolate town. But soon, he meets Abigail, a girl about eight years old. Although she seems to see things that he cannot, Doug credits this to her vivid and childlike imagination. As things begin occurring in the town that cannot be explained, Doug realizes that Abigail's incredible mind may be the key to unlocking Palisade Harbor's past, and what had gone wrong since he had left all those years ago.
