Hatred between the two countries runs deeper than the channel rarely separating them from each others throats but nevertheless the cunning King Louis accepts the pact sealed by the marriage of his eldest daughter, Princess Geneviève of France, to King Edward's youngest brother - Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester. Haughty, vain, almost fanatical in her piety and trained to bear a crown, Geneviève has no love for her English neighbours and favours other candidates for her illustrious hand but nevertheless is thrust into the heart of the Wars of the Roses with few allies and a husband she quickly resents. Trapped in the land of the enemy where knives are readily drawn in the marriage bed, Geneviève must learn to survive using her beauty, wit and political guile to master the game of smoke and mirrors the English and French so love to play. Bound to the tumultuous heart of fifteenth century England, can Geneviève endure against the ever changing tide of the cousin's war and campaigns waged between wilful women with words no less sharp than their men's swords? To counter their influence and what she believes is a threat to her family she allies herself with her husband's brothers Edmond and Richard and brings her Woodville relatives back to court after encouraging the marriages of her Woodville cousins Elizabeth and Jackie to the Dukes of Norfolk and Ruthland. Brought back to a court that is more divisive than ever Eliza must learn to watch out for her family and her rights as she navigate a terrible world in which the biggest threat to the house of York is no longer the house of Lancaster, but enemies within their own family.

Elisabetta "Eliza" de' Medici is only 13 years old when she becomes one of the most important people in Europe. Everything changes just a few months later when King Henry falls ill with a serious illness. When the physicians claim insanity a new faction, one that is against her great aunt to the queen, take power. The new faction, the York's, quickly separate Eliza from the people she has come to consider her family as the king and queen are moved into virtual exile at Windsor Castle during his illness and Eliza is left in the care of people that she neither knows nor trusts. As Eliza is tossed into this complicated new world she must learn to navigate her feelings and decide her loyalties as her love for a certain York Earl and what she feels is best for the country, collide with the love of the family that she has known and the loyalties of her past.

With a Civil War approaching, Eliza much learn where her loyalty is firmly lie and ready herself for a military campaign that will decide not only the future of her family, but the future of the country she has sworn to serve.

I believe we have a choice in this world, about how to tell sad stories. On the one hand you can sugarcoat it. I like that version as much as the next girl does. It's just not the truth. The truth is you don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world, but you do have a say in who hurts you. Life doesn't have to be perfect, for love to be extraordinary.
