Kodi Weaver is a twelve year old that has a deep love for dance, but sometimes the people in her life tell her that she can't do it. They don't even have to say anything to tell her that she's not good enough.
Her home life has always been rough. Her parents are never home and when they are, they don't take care of her. Her brother, Alex, was the only one that has been nice to her. Her sister was always mean to her, except when Alex ran away.
She's devastated about what happened and she decides to go look for him, with the help of a few friends. But instead of finding him, his body was found by the police. After his funeral, Kodi has her recital for her ballet class. She's very nervous, knowing that Alex won't be there.
In the middle of her solo, she twists her ankle. The next day, her dance instructor takes her to the doctor and finds a surprising turn. She can never do ballet again.
In August, she goes to school and everyone's listening this new music, hip hop. She starts to listen to it on her own. One day, she decides to dance to it, and she can.
She runs to Maggie's house to share the good news. It turns out that she danced to hip hop in high school. On the weekends, they meet up and Maggie teaches her all she knows. She also signs Kodi up for youth competitions to surprise her for her 13th birthday, but something gets in the way.
Will she be able to pursue her dream, or let something get in her way.
