Freedom in All it's Glory follows Elle's life from her first day of college. Her first day of freedom. Independence. Adulthood. She loves that she's on her own, just living her life. From going to school without being told, to getting her own dinner, to hanging in her room reading books for hours on end, Elle makes these choices herself. On her own. But what if freedom wasn't all that she thought it would be. What if it wasn't as glorious, as freeing, as wonderful? What if it was just... lonely? Disappointing? When Elles' world starts falling apart at the seams, when relationships strain and love gets messy, she starts to think that freedom isn't all it's cracked up to be. Maybe all it is, is being completely alone.

I am not feeling much resonance with the idea that there was 'co-operation' between my mother and me. I mean, certainly I would co-operate with her when it wasn't especially inconvenient, particularly when I was very young. I curried her favour in many ways, although the way I worked up my grandmother (my mother's mother) to see my point of view and meet my immediate and even medium-term needs on occasion was my proudest achievement. Then, late adolescence sent me packing, proudly eschewing both of my mothers as well as the rest of my immediate family and their places and their ways. Thank god, I wasn't going to be anything like that or them when I grew up. What a relief it was to be away from them all at last. I had chosen my university setting strategically. It had to be: a) far enough away from home that I couldn't get there conveniently for the weekend (by ground transport... these were the days before everyone flew everywhere, whenever), and b) in a city of some size... no more of this small town life for me.
