The village of Konohagakure has the Nara clan, deer shaman. Their cousin, or cadet branch, clan would be the Eruku of Yugakure. Kaen is the heiress of said branch and isn't interested in politics, so she runs away to Sunagakure after briefly visiting Shikamaru in Konohagakure. She is spotted by the ANBU and taken to the Kazekage for some interrogation. During her stay in the Hidden Sand Village, she meets Fuyu and learns about the interesting puppet masters.
