Lena never took the midnight train. But tonight, something pulled her toward it-maybe the weight of an exhausting day or the crisp autumn air whispering of change. She found an empty seat by the window, watching the city blur past, lost in thought.
Then he sat across from her.
Dark-haired, sharp-jawed, with eyes that flickered like city lights-he looked vaguely familiar. It took a moment before she realized. It was him. The stranger from the bookstore. The one she had locked eyes with two weeks ago before he vanished into the crowded street.
His gaze met hers, and recognition sparked. A slow smile curled his lips. "We keep running into each other," he murmured.
Lena's heart raced. "Seems that way."
The train rattled through the night, their conversation unfolding like an unfinished novel. He was James-an architect, a traveler, someone who believed in serendipity.
"I almost missed this train," he admitted. "But something told me to take it."
Lena felt it too. That strange, unshakable pull.
As the train slowed at her stop, she hesitated. She never hesitated. But tonight, she wanted to stay.
James must have seen it in her eyes. "Coffee?" he asked, a hopeful lilt in his voice.
She exhaled, smiling. "Coffee."
And just like that, the midnight train didn't take her home-it took her somewhere new. Somewhere she wanted to be.
